Tragedy.
There is absolutely no question that there has been a lot of sadness in the world lately. So much sadness that people often don't know what to do about it - do we talk about it? Do we try to avoid it? Do we allow it to consume us or do we try to just continue on, business as usual?
Well, yesterday the world suffered a horrible loss and people of all different walks of life were affected. Whether you are the world's biggest basketball fan, or someone so far removed from the world of sports, you have heard of Kobe Bryant. He was and will forever be an icon - more than basketball - and we all know it.
What would usually be a typical Sunday in most of our lives quickly turned into a Sunday of mourning. Everyone stopped in their tracks to talk about, tune into, and spread the word about the horrible helicopter accident. Every news channel was reporting on this, #mambaforever was and still is trending on every social media platform, and people everywhere are shouting "Kobe" as they toss their tissues into the trash can.
Through all of this, the show must go on, but as they say, "legends never die" and this legend didn't die yesterday. The Grammy's were held at the Staples Center last night - Kobe's home. The irony of this is truly chilling but everything that happened at The Grammy's that was not pre-planned is a true testament to just how much of an impact Kobe Bryant has had on so many individuals. This goes so much further than The Grammy's - every single person who ever crossed paths with Kobe Bryant and his family are speaking out, sending their condolences, and doing all they can to honor his and his daughter's life. If you don't know what I'm talking about, please take a few minutes to do some research. I promise it will be worth it.
It saddens me that despite all of this, there are people expressing anger toward anyone and everyone who are posting, sharing stories, or simply sending their thoughts and prayers out for Kobe, Gigi, and the Bryant family. Honestly, that negativity needs to go somewhere far away from here because it's completely unacceptable. We all need to take a step back and realize that every single human being is entitled to mourn in any capacity that they need to for anyone who was taken too soon - whether they had a personal relationship with them or not. Everyone is aware of the hardships our country and this world has faced in recent years, months, days, and mourning the death of a true icon does not belittle those hardships or the effects of them. But please for the love of god, let people mourn if they need to. This one hits hard for so many people and the negativity toward those people and news outlets needs to be buried immediately, because this legend will never die. This tragedy will become part of U.S. history. Our future unborn children will know, honor, and love Kobe and Gigi Bryant. And personally, I will continue to stand up to those who breathe negativity down our necks during times like this.
"The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do." - Kobe Bryant
