January 2, 2020
You don't suck.
I'm writing today's post a little late on purpose. January 2 is a day where many of us feel that we have already failed ourselves and all that we hoped for in the new year. We started off strong on January 1 - began our resolutions, ate healthier, worked out, planned out our budgets for the next 3 months - whatever it is that you promised yourself in the new year, you spent all of January 1 doing it.
...But then came January 2. You had to go back to work after the long holiday break. Your coworkers brought in leftover holiday goodies and you over indulged, you didn't set aside time to get to the gym, you forgot to pack lunch so you had to open up your wallet. You take a bathroom break, look in the mirror, and (cue the violins) say, "I failed. I suck". Then you open up Instagram and see 100 memes about already messing up in 2020 and that 2021 will be your year. Later, you get home from work and sink into the couch to continue listening to the sad symphony playing over and over in your head and then ... you read this blog post that begins with, "you don't suck" and suddenly that symphony softens and begins to disappear.
You don't suck. Say it out loud before you continue reading. Say it out loud until you believe it. Ready? Okay, keep reading...
Did that cookie from your coworker really ruin your day or did the idea that you can't have that cookie and then the fact that you did have that cookie ruin your day? Mindset, my friends. Stop being so hard on yourselves. The delicious goodness that you devoured at 10am is not at fault for you feeling failure today. The feeling of failure came from your own self and you deserve better than that. The good news is that once you are able to recognize what triggers that feeling of failure, you have the power to use it as leverage to feel success, positivity, and, guess what? S E L F - L O V E. If the cookie had such a negative impact on your day today, you won't want to feel that way again tomorrow. You may avoid eating the cookie all together or you may enjoy the cookie with a smile and the mindset that the cookie cannot and will not ruin your day or your year.
Maybe the cookie is a lame metaphor, but you get the idea here. We need to care for and love ourselves and that begins with ending the negative self-talk RIGHT NOW and screaming "I don't suck" in the mirror.
Please don't give up on yourselves on Day Two of 2020 - you have 364 days left of this year - a leap year blessing us with an extra day to love ourselves - and you have lots of cookies to eat or not eat, whichever makes you feel all mushy and gushy inside about yourself.
Now please excuse me while I go get a cookie to dunk into my coffee, and remember, you don't suck!
Sit Back & Enjoy Your Cup Of Joe
